Exterior Cleaning Is Largely Unregulated — What That Means for Your Home

Many homeowners assume that exterior cleaning is a straightforward service.

However, exterior treatment is one of the least regulated activities carried out on residential properties. There are no standardised qualifications required to offer services such as roof cleaning, render treatment or algae removal.

This matters more than most people realise.

Modern homes often include delicate coloured renders, natural slate, composite roofing systems and specialist finishes. These materials can be permanently damaged by incorrect pressure levels, inappropriate chemicals or poor working practices.

Common problems seen across the industry include:

  • High-pressure washing used on render and stone
  • Bleach-based chemicals applied without full disclosure
  • Moss removal that forces water beneath tiles
  • Operatives walking directly on fragile roof surfaces
  • Lack of insurance clarity if non-approved chemicals are used

Damage may not appear immediately. It can show up months or years later as:

  • Patchy discolouration
  • Accelerated algae regrowth
  • Cracked tiles
  • Increased porosity in render
  • Reduced lifespan of roofing materials

Exterior treatment should focus on solving the biological cause of staining rather than aggressively removing the visible effect.

Homeowners are entitled to ask:

  • What product is being applied?
  • Is it pH-neutral?
  • Can I see the Safety Data Sheet?
  • How is pressure controlled?
  • Will anyone be walking on my roof?

In an open marketplace, asking informed questions is one of the strongest forms of protection.

If you were hiring an exterior treatment contractor tomorrow, what questions would you ask before allowing work to begin?
